The Nubian Museum - Egypt obtained most of its rich source of gold thanks to Nubia, and Nubia was the "passage" from ancient Egypt to the exotic African lands situated further south. Many pharaohs built small temples and fortifications along the banks of the Nile in Nubia. Ebony, ivory, incense and precious metals and minerals were exported from them to Egypt, as well as prized Nubian slaves.

The new Nubian Museum opened in 1997, and the beauty of its architecture is well worth seeing. Set on a hill, it covers 50,000 square metres of gardens and buildings divided into individual sections. It is partly an open-air museum, where visitors can wander along paths between prehistoric caves and ancient Egyptian statues, obelisks and columns, Roman frescoes, and a typical Nubian house.
