Temple Enclosure - Dendera

The Temple Enclosure - A massive mud-brick wall has survived together with the surrounding temple complex. Originally the wall enclosed the temple on three sides, with an entrance through a gate built by Domitian, which forms the modern entrance to the temple. The reliefs on the outer walls are perfectly preserved and depict the divine birth and childhood of Horus. The god Bes, protector of women during childbirth, is shown along the colonnade. The grotesque appearance of this dwarf god was used to drive away evil spirits at the moment of birth.

Nearby monuments
The Dendera temple has a long history and many old tombs still remain within it. The temple dates back to King Mentuhotep Nebhepetre of the 11th dynasty. The western side of the temple enclosure was moved to the Museum in Cairo.
