Ras Muhammad was reported for protection against fishing and other human activities.

Some of the fishing methods, such as using dynamite and knives, also had an effect on the coral reef and the fish population.

In 1983, the Agency for Egyptian Environment (EEA) established an area as a marine reserve for the protection of marine and terrestrial nature.

The park was also established to protect against urban sprawl from Sharm el-Sheikh.

The name of the reserve literally means "Head of Muhammad", where "head" in this case means "headland". There is a saying that the name was created because the side view of the contour of the cliff looks like the profile of a bearded man's face, where the horizontal layers show the nose and the bearded chin.

Ras Mohammed is one of the most beautiful National Parks in Egypt.

The coral reef exists along the coast around Ras Mohammad near the shoreline.

More than 220 coral species are found in the Ras Mohammad area, 125 of them with soft corals. Coral reefs are located 50 to 100 cm under the surface of the sea, and they have a width of 30 to 50 m, in most places. Although in some places on the west coast, the coral reef is 8 to 9 km wide.

This area is home to more than 1,000 species of fish, 40 species of star fish, 25 species of sea urchins, over 100 species of molluscs and 150 species of crustaceans.

Among other things, sea turtles such as the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and tortoiseshell (Eretmochelys imbricata) appear regularly in Ras Mohammad
